Freemasonry appears to the public as a secret and complex universe, with its lodges reserved for the initiated, its obscure ranks and its abstruse biblical and esoteric references. Yet when the movement was born in London in 1717, Freemasons' meetings were held in busy taverns. How has Freemasonry evolved over more than three centuries, from the first Masonic lodge in Scotland to its expansion in Europe, and particularly in France?
This guided tour invites curious history buffs to discover and understand Freemasonry today and in the past: how it is organised, the rites of entry, the layout of the temples, and the great figures of French and foreign Freemasonry.
You'll understand the extent to which Freemasons, who have been present in France for 300 years, have played a key role in shaping our society today. Their famous symbols - the compass, the square, the level, the beehive and many others - can be seen on the façades and sculpted groups of the capital.
Your guide will teach you to recognise and understand these symbols, which populate the world of Freemasonry and bear witness to its presence and influence in France since the dawn of the 18th century.
