Conceived as a veritable manifesto highlighting the diversity of the decorative arts, this retrospective of Richard Peduzzi's work presents a rich career spanning fifty years of creation. This set designer, whose career took a turning point when he met Patrice Chéreau in 1969, created stage sets for the Théâtre des Amandiers and the Paris Opera, as well as for films such as La Reine Margot.
"I chose the theatre set as a means of painting, of creating a dialogue between architecture and sculpture," he says at the start of this exhibition, for which he designed the scenography himself. Visitors will be able to stroll past several key scenes from his paintings dedicated to the theatre, which initially provoked controversy before being acclaimed for their boldness and originality.
As well as theatre sets, Richard Peduzzi's career has been shaped by other disciplines such as design, interior architecture and furniture creation. After working with the Mobilier National in 1988, he created objects and furniture for several museums, including the Louvre, with their Atelier de Recherche et de Création (ARC). He then went on to design furniture for the library-museum at the Palais Garnier - Opéra National de Paris. In all, more than 100 pieces of furniture designed by 2013 will be added to the Mobilier National's collections.
